How long do Bell Tents last?

With proper care and maintenance your bell tent can last up to 10 years.

To make the most of your bell tent please make sure you:

  • Pitch on flat, drained, grassy land
  • Do not pitch under trees as the tree resin, bird droppings, etc. will spoil the canvas
  • Cooking stains, sand and salt will also affect the canvas
  • Always store your tent dry. The smallest amount of damp will ruin your tent if packed away wet or damp

Why should I choose a canvas tent?

Canvas tents last much longer than their nylon or polyester counterparts when properly maintained. The cotton canvas can be treated for water, mould and ultraviolet radiation to allow a longer lifespan. There are plenty of products available today to keep your tent in the best condition for years to come.

Will my Bell Tent leak?

When a new tent is put up in the rain for the first time, you may notice a slight leak around the seams. This is normal and please do not worry. Once the tent has been soaked, the canvas weave tightens and the leaks will stop.

Depending on usage, rain and ultraviolet radiation will wear down the outer protective layer of your tent over time so please re-proof the canvas once this happens. If water on the canvas no longer ‘beads’ then it is time to re-proof your tent.

Will my Bell Tent withstand windy conditions?

When pitched correctly your tent will withstand gusts of up to 30mph. This can depend on how exposed the location is and ground conditions. Please bear in mind if the weather has been very wet then tent pegs can slip out of the ground more easily. Our bell tents have been tested extensively and designed to be sturdy and aerodynamic. The larger the tent, the less stable in high winds.

If wind gusts of 30mph or more are forecasted then we strongly advise you do not pitch your tent. Our warranty is not able to cover damage to tents pitched in high wind speeds.

If your tent is pitched in windy conditions it’s important to check and adjust the guy ropes regularly, make sure the doors are zipped up securely, windows zipped closed and make sure the pegs are secure.

Keep your eye on weather reports and store away in extreme weather.

Is my Bell Tent fire retardant?

Yes, all tents we sell meet European Bs5852 standards for fire retardancy.

Is there a warranty on my Bell Tent?

Yes, we offer a 12 month* manufacturers warranty which covers defects which may occur during the manufacturing process. *For trade warranty information please see our warranty's page.

What sizes of Bell Tents are available?

Currently we offer a 4m and 5m Bell Tent, Emperor Tent and Touareg Tent. However, if you are interested in other sizes please do get in contact.

Where is best to pitch my Bell Tent?

A flat and well drained grassy surface is the ideal setting for your Bell Tent to be pitched. Be mindful of stones and also trees especially in woodland surroundings as they can drop leaves, bird droppings and can be dangerous during storms.

Can I use my Bell Tent all year round?

Bell tents are suitable for all seasons but be mindful that during the colder months it is harder to get your tent fully dry to be packed away. You may also require a log burner which can easily be installed to any bell tent using a flashing kit.

Bell tents are designed to be used for short camping trips and leisure activities but we understand some customers pitch their bell tents for several months during the Summer. In these cases we’d recommend regularly checking the tent for any damage or maintenance required. Tents pitched for a longer time will require re-proofing more regularly.

Can Bell Tents be used during hot weather?

Yes, they can. The groundsheets on all tents we sell can be zipped off so that you can roll up the sides on hot days to let air flow through. They also have mesh windows to allow air flow without bugs getting in.

Bell Tent Maintenance

How do I store my Bell Tent?

The cotton must be bone dry before it is stored. Never store away a wet tent. Otherwise, fungus will affect the canvas and cause little black dots that cannot be removed. The canvas has been impregnated with an anti-fungal/waterproof coating, but you should re-proof your tent on a regular basis if you use it often or pitch it in a harsh environment.

Solar radiation can affect the waterproof quality of your tent. After 12 to 25 weeks of use, a waterproof/antifungal agent should be applied on a regular basis. This will extend the lifespan of your tent considerably.

How do I prevent mould and mildew from getting on my Bell Tent?

Mildew is caused by moisture and will form if your tent is stored away damp. Mould stains will also appear if your canvas tent is no longer waterproof.

By following the steps below you will prevent the chance of mould or mildew ruining your canvas:

  • Never store a damp or wet tent. If you have no other option but to put your tent away wet, then make sure the groundsheet is free of mud and dirt and pitch your tent within two days, allowing it to air dry properly.
  • Always store your tent away clean and dry in a well-ventilated space
  • When a pitched tent is not in use make sure it is still ventilated by opening the doors and windows to allow air flow.
  • Do not hang your tent up to dry as mould may form in the damp folds. The best way to get a tent dry is by re-pitching it.
  • Clean and reproof your tent regularly to ensure your tent remains waterproof and enjoys a long life.
  • Store your tent in a cotton bag which will allow it to breathe and keep it clean. All our tents come with a cotton canvas bag as standard.
  • Make sure you pitch your tent on flat ground free from branches and stones. This will allow the tent to stand correctly and water will slide easily off the canvas.
  • Avoid touching the tent when it is raining as this allows water to pass through inside the tent.
  • Be careful with creams, lotions, suntan oil, etc. Greasy hands may adversely affect the tents’ waterproofness.
  • Never clean the groundsheet with water which contains soap. Use a dry piece of cloth and a sponge to clean it
  • Re-proof your tent after 12 to 25 weeks of use to protect it against solar radiation and extend its lifespan
  • If your tent is no longer waterproof and/or if black stains have formed on the canvas, you need to dry the tent completely and treat it with specialized products or send this to a company who can professionally do this for you. Get in touch for our recommendations.
  • Do not apply laundry detergent, dish soap, all-purpose cleaners or neat bleach to the canvas as they will damage the canvas treatments. Dirt or mud can be dry-brushed off with a very soft brush.

How do I remove mould spots from my Bell Tent?

Always store your tent away dry or mildew will form on the canvas after 2 - 3 days.

Getting the tent cleaned professionally is the best way to get mildew and mould spots off your canvas. This will guarantee a clean tent which has been waterproofed and treated for mould and rot.

How do I treat my Bell Tent?

When applying a new coating to your tent, take care to do it correctly by following the steps below:

  • Pitch your tent and make sure it is completely dry
  • Remove all dust and dirt with a soft brush
  • Apply the agent evenly with a soft brush
  • Make sure the cotton is soaked all over the tent
  • Allow your tent to air dry but preferably not in hot sunshine

How should I store my Bell Tent?

Bell tents must be stored away completely dry in a dry storage area. Make sure your tent is completely dry packing it away or it can be damaged by mould and mildew.

How easy is it to pitch my Bell Tent?

Bell tents are very easy to pitch and take around 10-15 minutes to put up. Some of the larger tents such as the Emperor and Touareg need two people to pitch comfortably. Instructions will be provided with your tent and we are on hand for any questions you have.
